Syracuse Transportation

We like to refer to the Syracuse area as a 20-minute city! Visitors can get almost anywhere from downtown Syracuse within an easily navigable 20-minute drive. Looking for all the ways to get around town and further during your visit? We’ve got the 411 on how to get where you need to go! 

Car

Syracuse is known for its minimal traffic, making it easy for visitors to get around town by vehicle. Major NYS thoroughfares cross through the region, making Syracuse a connecting point for both north/south and east/west travel via NYS I-90 (the Thruway) and I-81. Smaller highways and routes connect the downtown area in all four directions and include I-481, I-690, Rt. 20 and more. 

Walking

Visitors can easily walk around the entire downtown area. It’s a short distance from our main convention center, The Oncenter, to popular spots like Clinton Square and Armory Square. You can even follow along the Syracuse Creekwalk from downtown all the way to Destiny USA. Don’t miss out on some of our popular self-guided walking tours while you’re in town as well!

Biking + More

Syracuse has turned into a top biking and scooter town the last several years! The Syracuse area home to several biking trails and connecting paths that can bring you all around the region. The Loop the Lake Trail, in connection with the Creekwalk can bring you all the way from downtown Syracuse out to Liverpool. The Connective Corridor area connects Syracuse University to the downtown area campus and more. In addition, the Syracuse region is a part of both the Erie Canal Trail and has a 6-mile portion of the Empire State Trail, running from Syracuse to Dewitt. For those looking for a more relaxing mode of bicycling transportation, rent an electric bike or scooter via the Veo app and travel anywhere within Syracuse city limits. 

Taxis + More

Taxis, Uber and Lyft are all available in the area and ready to take you where you need to go! From concert venues to sporting events or even just a ride out of the city for some apple picking, all major services are accessible in the greater Syracuse area.

Local Public Transportation

The Centro bus system provides public transportation around the city and Onondaga County as well as special routes for large events like the NYS Fair. Bus routes and times can be found on the Centro website

Out of County Transportation

The William F. Walsh Regional Transportation Center is serviced by several connecting entities including, Amtrak, Greyhound, Megabus, Trailways and Centro, that frequent a wider variety of destinations such as Rochester, Niagara Falls, Boston, New York City, Washington D.C. and Philadelphia.
