A Guide to All Things Autumn

There’s something special about fall in Syracuse.

The air gets crispy enough for sweater weather, the leaves put on their annual color show, and suddenly there's a hot cup of cider and a donut calling your name.

Whether you’re dreading the season that comes shortly after fall, or ready for the hot summer to end, Syracuse has plenty of fall to soak in and enjoy. If you plan to chase peak foliage, hit the golf course, cheer on a local team or simply go on a fall walk, we are here to help you get prepared so you can make your Central New York autumn adventure even better.

Below is your guide to get ready and start experiencing autumn the Syracuse way.

Know Before You Leaf Peep in CNY

Timing is everything when it comes to fall foliage. CNY typically begins seeing color in mid- September, with some of the most vibrant foliage arriving in mid-October. But, at the end of the day Mother Nature makes the final call, so conditions can vary from year to year.

Before heading out, check the latest foliage and weather conditions for weekly updates around the state and don’t forget your camera!

A couple of our favorite places to catch the colors include:

Highland Forest

With over 20 miles of trails, Highland Forest offers plenty of opportunities to hike, bike and surround yourself with autumn color.

Pratt’s Falls Park

With trails surrounded by changing leaves and a 137-foot waterfall, Pratt’s Falls Park has fall scenes that are hard to beat.

Fall Golf Tips

You don’t have to hike to enjoy fall foliage - play a round of golf instead!

Fall is one of the best times to golf in Syracuse. Cooler temperatures, colorful fairways and rolling Central New York landscapes make an autumn tee time something special.

Book your tee time ahead when possible, especially on beautiful fall weekends. Morning rounds can be chilly, daylight becomes shorter as the season progresses and course schedules may change later in the season, so check conditions before heading out. And don't forget the layers!

Green Lakes State Park Golf Course pairs a round of golf with the incredible scenery of Green Lakes State Park, making it an easy addition to a fall getaway.

You can also explore courses throughout Onondaga County with the Visit Syracuse Golf Tour on our app and discover even more places to play among the changing leaves.

Fall Means Game Time

Changing leaves aren’t the only reason to get excited about fall in Syracuse. Autumn is one of the best times to experience the Syracuse sports scene and support the teams that call us home.

Head to the JMA Wireless Dome and join a sea of Orange for Syracuse University football. A Syracuse game day is more than just the action on the field, it’s the energy around University Hill, fans dressed in orange, and the excitement of cheering alongside the local community.

And football isn’t your only option. As fall progresses, basketball, and hockey seasons bring even more opportunities to catch a game. Check schedules for local colleges, high schools, club teams and community sports happening throughout Onondaga County, too. Supporting a local team is one of the easiest and most fun ways to experience Syracuse alongside the people who call it home.

Game Day Tip: Check schedules and grab tickets ahead of time when possible. Major game days can mean additional traffic and parking demand around University Hill, so give yourself a little extra time to arrive and enjoy the atmosphere.

Pick Your Perfect Fall Walk

You don’t need to tackle a major hike to enjoy Syracuse’s fall foliage. Pick an adventure based on the kind of day you’re looking for.

Easy + Leisurely → Onondaga Lake Park

Enjoy a relaxing waterfront walk with plenty of room to take in the scenery.

Nature Escape → Beaver Lake Nature Center

Explore peaceful trails through a variety of habitats and keep an eye out for fall wildlife.

Farms & Orchards 101

Apple picking, pumpkins, corn mazes and cider donuts are practically required during a Central New York fall. Before you head to the farm, there are a few things worth knowing:

Apple varieties change throughout the season. If there’s a particular variety you’re hoping to pick, check what’s available before visiting.
Pumpkin season gets better as fall rolls on. September starts the fun, while October brings plenty of pumpkin-picking opportunities.
U-pick availability can change. Weather and crowds affect what’s available, so check the farm’s website or social media before making the trip.
Fall weekends get busy. Arriving earlier in the day can mean shorter lines and more time to explore.
Wear the right shoes. Farms and orchards can get muddy, particularly after rain.

For the full Central New York fall experience, explore favorites like Beak & Skiff Apple Orchards, Springside Farm, and Tim’s Pumpkin Patch for seasonal activities, treats and plenty of photo opportunities. These are just a few!

Have a Rainy-Day Backup Plan

A little rain doesn’t have to ruin your fall getaway.

Head downtown and explore the Erie Canal Museum, experience American art and ceramics at the Everson Museum of Art, browse local shops or go somewhere like Phoebe's for a cozy afternoon lunch.

You can also use a rainy afternoon as an excuse to slow down. Grab a coffee, explore a neighborhood you haven’t visited yet, or do a little shopping at Destiny USA before heading back outside when the weather clears. Sometimes the best fall days don’t go exactly according to plan.

Don’t Forget About Ticks

Cooler temperatures don’t necessarily mean ticks have disappeared for the season. If your fall plans include hiking, walking through wooded or grassy areas, visiting parks or spending time on trails, a little preparation can go a long way. Learn more by checking out the CNY Lyme Alliance. Their vision is a Central New York free of the burdens of Lyme and Tick-Borne Disease.

Use an appropriate insect repellent before heading outdoors and consider long pants, taller socks and closed-toe shoes when exploring wooded or brushy areas. Staying toward the center of marked trails can also help limit contact with tall grass and vegetation.

When your adventure is over, check yourself, children, clothing and pets for ticks. Pay particular attention to less visible areas like behind the knees, around the waist, under the arms and along the hairline.

A quick tick check is an easy addition to the end of a great fall day.
