Neighborhood Spotlight: Tipperary Hill

Want to celebrate St. Patrick's Day or Irish heritage all year round? Then Tipperary Hill is the place for you.

Known to locals as Tipp Hill, this neighborhood became home to Irish immigrants in the 1920s and never lost touch with it's roots. There's plenty to do in Tipperary Hill but we've curated a list of the best activities, events and spots to get the full experience:

Green Beer Sunday

Every February, Colemans Authentic Irish Pub hosts a St. Patrick's season kick-off the last Sunday of the month. This event includes a two and half block parade leading the delivery of a tanker full of green beer to Colemans. People gather by the masses both indoors and outdoors to deck themselves out in green and drink green beer by the pitcher-full. This iconic event hosts live music and provides all the pre-St. Patrick's Day vibes you could ever want.

Rosamond Gifford Zoo

What do Asian Elephants and Irish immigrants have in common? They've both called Tipperary Hill home. The Rosamond Gifford Zoo is home to penguins, snow leopards, lions, primates and more. The zoo is all-season as they have indoor and outdoor exhibits paired with animals that thrive with the changing of seasons.

Irish Pubs & Restaurants

When people think of Ireland they sometimes think of a glass of Guinness and welcoming pub. Tipp Hill has plenty of spots that embody this classic notion. Catch live music at Colemans Authentic Irish Pub, try a craft beverage at Now & Later, catch up with friends at Nibsy's or mix with regulars at Wheeler's. Warning: Just because you're in an Irish neighborhood doesn't mean your friends will be any more accepting of an "Irish Goodbye."

Burnet Park

You can even get your golf on in this neighborhood. Burnet Park on Tipperary Hill is home to a 9-hole public golf course along with a playground, swimming pool, tennis courts and a baseball field. This park is perfect for an active family day or getting a quick 9 holes in after work.

Upside Down Traffic Light

What happens when Irish immigrants won't stand for "British red" being over "Irish green" on their local traffic light? Your neighborhood passes a law to approve the world's only "Upside Down" traffic light. This is something that actually happened in 1928 and the light is still there with a monument across the street dedicated to the "stone throwers" who would vandalize the red light until it's reversal. Every year at midnight on St. Patrick's Day, a shamrock is painted in the road beneath to commemorate the start of the holiday.

Annual Shamrock Run

Every spring runners take to the hilly landscape of Tipperary Hill for a 4-mile course. The neighborhood streets shut down to accommodate dedicated runners wearing everything from leprechaun costumes to classic running wear. There's even a .6 mile fun run for children ages 5-12.
