Indoor Syracuse Adventures: What to Do When It Rains

Rainy days in Syracuse don’t have to mean staying in.

Whether you are craving a perfectly frothed latte, an exciting indoor puzzle, or a dose of world-class art, CNY has plenty of ways to keep you entertained, inspired, and completely dry!

🎬 Dinner and a Show

Upgrade your standard movie night by swapping out standard stadium seats for premium comfort. At Movie Tavern in Camillus, you can bypass the traditional concession stand and order gourmet burgers, local drafts, and loaded popcorn delivered straight to your luxury recliner.

If you prefer your cinema with a side of science, head to the Milton J. Rubenstein Museum of Science and Technology (MOST). Take a seat in the National Grid ExploraDome, where massive, immersive films transport you from the deep cosmos to prehistoric jungles. It's an absolute hit for both kids and adults who want a larger-than-life escape from the drizzle.

📚 Books, Records & Café Vibes

Nothing pairs better with a gray, drizzly afternoon than the smell of old books and fresh espresso. Head over to the historic Eastwood neighborhood to get lost in the endless shelves of The Books End and Books & Melodies. These local staples are packed with labyrinthine rooms of used books, vintage vinyl records, and quirky hidden treasures.

Once your arms are full of finds, take a short stroll over to The Cracked Bean Roastery. Cozy up with a specialty latte and appreciate the warm neighborhood atmosphere, and if you keep an eye out the window, you might even spot some local neighborhood dogs walking past in their miniature raincoats.

🖼 Museums to fit Every Mood

Syracuse boasts a dense, vibrant museum scene that makes it easy to stay sheltered while expanding your horizons:

For the History Buffs: Step back in time at the Erie Canal Museum, which features the only remaining weighlock building in the country and a full-size replica canal boat you can explore. Nearby, the Onondaga Historical Association (OHA) dives deep into local heritage, local industries, and the surprising ways Syracuse intersected with national pop culture history.
For Indigenous Culture: Visit the Skä•noñh – Great Law of Peace Center on the shore of Onondaga Lake. This Haudenosaunee Cultural Center shares the profound history and oral traditions of the native peoples of Central New York, focusing on creation, historical contact, and the enduring Great Law of Peace.
For the Art Enthusiasts: Spend a few hours wandering through the Everson Museum of Art, an architectural marvel designed by I.M. Pei that houses a world-renowned collection of ceramics, paintings, and sculptures. They even have their own in-house cafe full of hand-made pottery. Or check out Brewer Harris Projects, a contemporary art gallery right in the heart of downtown!
