While we all remember the frigid Syracuse winters, we also remember that our summers can get hot!  Whether you're a local looking for new ways to beat the heat or a visitor seeking relief from the summer sun, this guide is your ticket to staying cool in Onondaga County during the summer.  We have relaxing local beaches, indoor places to explore, unique ice cream shops and plenty of indoor (or outdoor) dining.  Here are our top ways to keep cool during the summer months in Central NY!

Local Beaches

Green Lakes

This picturesque state park has many options to stay cool!  Go for a swim and relax on the beach, take a walk on the forest-shaded trails and admire the meromictic lake, or grab a bite at the Yards Grille! Green lake sis open during the summer from 11:00 am - 7:00 pm, bring your family for a beach picnic day while lifeguards are on duty!

Jamesville Beach Park

For a smaller, quiet beach day, visit Jamesville Beach!  Right down the street from the village, you can hang out with friends in the water, and swim out to the dock.  Take your kids to the playground, play a round of beach volleyball, and take your dog on a stroll around the dog park.

Jamesville Beach

The Waterfront at Clift Park, Skaneateles, NY

Enjoy the cool waters of Skaneateles Lake and see the sights of this adorable Onondaga County town!  Swimming is open to the public Monday through Sunday from 1:00 pm until 6:30 pm.  Our rule of thumb is, always make sure there's a lifeguard on duty before you dive in!

 The Everson Museum of Art

According to the art museum, “The Everson is for everyone, a place where community connects, and inspiration surrounds you.” Located at 401 Harrison Street, Syracuse, the Everson is the first museum to dedicate itself to American art. With a collection of over 10,000 objects, it’s a unique place to spend a relaxing morning, afternoon, or evening and beat the heat from outside. The Everson produces more than 10-15 exhibits annually which promotes repeat visitors, so if you thought you’ve seen everything in the summer, think again - make sure you stay up to date with their events and visit year-round! In addition, try Louise, the new artistic cafe at the museum!  Come cool off and try their unique concoctions.

Destiny USA

With over 300 attractions, retail spaces, restaurants, and activities, there's so much to do and see at Destiny!  Check out a new hit movie, the Wonder Works ropes course, or indulge in some much-needed retail therapy.
